A flight from Chennai, India due to land at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has been diverted due to the bad weather conditions with heavy rain and lightning in the vicinity of Katunayake today evening, Airport officials said.
The officer in charge of the airport confirmed that there were 143 passengers and 15 crew members in this flight and the flight carrying them landed at Mattala Airport at around 05.00 pm.
The officer in charge of Mattala Airport further stated that as soon as it is confirmed that the weather condition in the area around Katunayake Airport has improved, the flight will be diverted back to the Katunayake Airport again.
This is the second time in week flight due to land at BIA has been diverted to Mattala. Earlier three flights were diverted.
