Floating solar panels are to be installed in the Chandrika Tank and the Kiri Ibban Tank on a grant by the Korean Government.
In accordance with the Framework Convention regarding aid and grants signed in 2009, the Korean Government has agreed to provide a 6.83 billion Won grant to install 1 Megawatt floating solar panel system power plants.
Supervision would be carried out by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology for the Korean Government.
Accordingly, the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy to the Cabinet in regard to signing a memorandum of understanding between the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, the Ministry and the Department of External Resources, was approved by the cabinet.
“Such floating solar panels are used in developed countries but we still have not gone for such a system change”, the Cabinet Spokesman, Bandula Gunawardena said, adding that the project is experimental.
