Focus on developing public facilities in Colombo

Several significant decisions were taken during the first committee meeting of the Colombo Regional Development Committee(CRDC) under the new National People’s Power (NPP) government. The meeting was held yesterday, December 23, 2024, at the auditorium of the Colombo Divisional Secretariat.

The President of the CRDC and Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Sunil Watagala, served as the chairperson of the committee. Special attention was given by the committee to the floating market located in the middle of the city.

During the meeting, the Colombo Municipal Council was instructed to carry out the necessary renovations in the floating market area and to establish adequate sanitary facilities for the consumers visiting the market.

The committee paid special attention to the issues of drug use and other abuses occurring in the area. They instructed the police to investigate the matter and take immediate action to prevent such activities.

The minister further stated that the new NPP government does not interfere in the decisions made by the law enforcement sector.Instead, they have been granted full freedom to act according to their rules and regulations. He emphasized that they must fulfill their responsibilities properly to serve the public effectively.

He also instructed the Colombo Municipal Council and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to establish a mobile sanitary toilet system in the Galle Face area to enhance public convenience during the upcoming festive season.

The meeting also addressed various issues faced by the public in the Colombo district, including housing facilities, the issuance of identity cards, health concerns, and power supply problems. The Secretary of the Colombo District Secretariat, Mr. Sadharuwan Anuruddha, participated alongside committee members, including former Municipal Councillor Hemantha Weerakoon, Colombo District parliamentary candidate Vray Kali Balthasar, N. Shivanandarajah, M. K. M. Muzamddin, N. M. Ishaad and the senior police officers, and several officials representing relevant government agencies.

The minister stated that the actions taken and the progress report on the discussed matters should be forwarded to the next committee meeting, which is scheduled to be held in January 2025.
