Food inflation soars in Sri Lanka

News

Food inflation is virtually galloping in Sri Lanka, breaking all previous records amidst a surging cost of living.

The Central Bank said on Wednesday that Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 93.7 per cent in August 2022 from 90.9 per cent in July 2022,

Headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (Y-o-Y) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2013=100)1 increased to 64.3 per cent in August 2022 from 60.8 per cent in July 2022.

This increase in Y-o-Y inflation was mainly driven by the monthly increases of both Food and Non-Food categories.

Non-Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 50.2 per cent in August 2022 from 46.5 per cent in July 2022.
