A bale of baby Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) was released to the ocean by a group of foreigners in Kandakuliya.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation said today (December 21) that Olive Ridley turtles had nested in the beach areas at Kandakuliya, the officials preserved the nest at the same area they were located throughout the incubation period.
Thereafter, when hatchlings emerged they released the turtles with the participation of a group of foreigners, residing in the local tourist area.
Olive Ridley turtles are listed as a vulnerable species according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
It is believed that these reptiles live around 50 years and are found nesting primarily in India and Sri Lanka while some nesting areas have been discovered in Bangladesh.
