Former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal is returning to the Central Bank as Governor with effect from September 16, a highly-placed Treasury source said on Friday.
A Cabinet paper also giving Mr. Cabraal, currently State Minister of Finance, Cabinet rank in the new position is being prepared for this purpose and would be presented to the Cabinet next week.
There was no independent confirmation so far from Mr. Cabraal or incumbent Governor Prof. W.D. Lakshman, who was due to preside at a media briefing at 3 pm today to explain whether the Monetary Board has increased interest rates or kept it at current levels, among other decisions on policy.
Newspapers and social media this week have been filled with the news that Mr. Cabraal was taking over as Governor in the midst of an economic crisis where the country is struggling with a shortage of foreign currency.
