SJB MP Dr Rajitha Senaratne said that he had warned the former Secretary of the Health Ministry, Janaka Chandraguptha not to intervene with medical purchasing related activities.
He made this comment at the parliament today while commenting on the Health Ministry's previous system of purchasing medicine under a special pathway system.
He said that he warned the former Secretary that interfering with medicine is a dangerous move and therefore to allow the doctors and pharmacists to decide on the medicine purchases, as any complication would lead him to trouble and event to imprisonment.
Mr Senaratne said that health ministry during the previous minister’s tenure, added a special facility to the waiver of registration of medicine as special pathway, under that medicine purchases are directly get approved by the National Medicines regulatory Authority trough It’s Chief executive officer (CEO)
“There is no system such as a special pathway in other countries. Through a special pathway, the ministry was trying to choose medicines for import as they were essential commodities like rice and dhal.
Dr Senaratne's comments came as the CID earlier in the day questeiond the former Health Secretary
Former Secretary to the Health Ministry, Janaka Chandragupta had left the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) premises after giving a statement.
