Former Speaker and NPP MP Asoka Ranwala was arrested today following a road accident in the Denimulla area of Sapugaskanda last night, police said.
Ranwala was taken into custody on charges of dangerous driving and failing to prevent an accident.
He is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and remains under police protection.
The incident occurred when the jeep in which the he was travelling collided head-on with a car.
A 25-year-old woman, her six-month-old infant, and her 55-year-old mother who were in the car, sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. The infant was later transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for further care.
Police investigations are ongoing.
