Yesterday (10th July) maked the 93rd Birthday of a man who was the founder of the "Schools Road Safety Squads" in the country when he was a Senior Prefect of his own school at Kingswood College Kandy.
He was a Rover leader when he commenced this project "Road Safety for Schools" at Kingswood to keep a watch on the pupils to cross the street from one side to the other.
No one ever thought of this idea at any time in the country and this was spontaneous effort of his alone. He was given the approval by his Principal and then by the Kandy Police Traffic Unite as he was doing this effort on a public road.
Then this idea was taken to his sister school Kandy Girls' high School and copied right round the country.
After he left school he joined the police Service to further this movement and also the first media spokesman for the Police.
He retired as a Senior Superintednent of police, even though he was the first on the Seniority list and others below him were promoted, which made his to retire prematurely, on his own accord.
