Four suspects who are in remand custody for allegedly stealing explosives from a rock quarry in Mawanella were further remanded till January 21 today (7) after being produced before Mawanella District Judge Upul Rajakaruna.
The four suspects, Sarath Bandara (48) of Peradeniya, Dushan Pinnagolla (49) of Thalawatta, Sugath Weerasinghe (36) of Boyagama and Sugath Gimhana (21) of Pilimathalawa, were not produced in court today owing to the prevailing COVID-19 situation.
The stock of explosives, comprising 20 detonators, 15 kilograms of Ammonium Nitrate, 35 metres of detonator cord and 750 grams of water gel explosive were reported missing on December 23 by the owner of the quarry.
Mawanella police which investigated the incident arrested the first suspect, who was an employee of the rock quarry from Peradeniya on December 24. He was then handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further questioning. The other three suspects were taken into custody following the CID investigation.
