At least fourteen Indian fishermen were taken into custody this morning in Mannar by the Navy for engaging in illegal bottom trawling in Mannar Sea, Navy said.
Two of their mechanized bottom trawlers were also taken into naval custody. The arrested fishermen are from Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu.
The arrested fishermen were brought to Thalaimannar Naval camp for inquiries and were handed over to officials of Fisheries Department for further legal action.
According to the Navy, 529 Indian fishermen were taken into custody this year alone along with 68 mechanized bottom trawler
