A full, transparent investigation is essential on the Rambukkana incident and the people’s right to peaceful protest must be upheld, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said.
In a Twitter message, Ms. Chung said she is deeply saddened by the horrible news coming out of Rambukkana.
“I condemn any violence - whether against protesters or police - and call for restraint & calm from all sides,” the US Ambassador said.
One person died and 24 others sustained gunshot injuries after police fired at them as a result of an ongoing protest against the fuel hike in Rambukkana yesterday. Police said the protestors were obstructing a fuel transporting bowser and had attempted to cause damage to the vehicle.
