The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has announced an indefinite island-wide strike from 8.00am tomorrow (24) in protest against the government's decision to suspend the increase in the Disturbance, Availability and Transport (DAT) allowance given to doctors.
The government had recently increased the DAT allowance for doctors by Rs. 35, 000 after Cabinet approved a proposal to this effect submitted by President and Finance Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Health Ministry however, has now stated that the Rs. 35, 000 increase has been suspended as the Treasury has not released the funds to enable the payment of the increase in DAT allowance.
Accordingly, the GMOA's Executive Committee unanimously decided to launch an indefinite strike from 8.00am tomorrow in protest at the government's decision.
A press release by the GMOA stated that its Central Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss and decide on the future course of its trade union action.
