Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Udaya Gammanpila today questioned the decision to transfer 37 police officers saying this was in violation of election laws.
“We are in an election period and no police transfers can take place without the consent of the Election Commission. These transfers must be immediately cancelled if they were done without the necessary authorisation, “Mr. Gammanpila said at a press conference today.
The Police Department announced on Sunday that nine Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) and 28 Police OICs, have been transferred with immediate effect.
The transfers have raised concerns given that nominations have already been called for the Local Authorities elections and the Election Commission has issued a directive banning all transfers/ promotions/recruitments etc. in the state sector.
Mr. Gammanpila said that transferring police officers ahead of an election is intended to give an unfair advantage to the government in the elections.
