An event to mark the 154th Birth Anniversary of Mahathma Gandhi, known as India's "Father of the Nation," was held yesterday (2) at the Mahinda College, Galle. The event was organised by the Consulate General of India, Hambantota.
India's Consul General in Hambantota, Harvinder Singh along with Principal of Mahinda College R.M Maddumahewage paid floral tribute to statue of Mahathma Gandhi during the event. India also gifted a large stock of books to the Mahinda College Library to mark the occasion of "Gandhi Jayanti."
To mark the occasion, a " Bhajan Sangeet Programme " was also organized with the participation of students from Mahinda College, Richmond College, Sanghamitta College & Siridhamma College in Galle.
Mahathma Gandhi attended the Prize Giving of Mahinda College, Galle in 1927 during a visit to the island. He is recorded to have delivered a speech on the independence movement on the occasion.
