The importing of 367 non-essential items without a valid license has been restricted with effect from midnight today (09).
An extraordinary gazette with regulations has been issued by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa today. The new Imports and Exports (Control) Regulations No. 05 of 2022 will be applicable to the importation of goods that have the date of Bill of Lading/AirWay bill on or after March 10.
Under this regulation importing of fruits such as oranges, apples, grapes, dairy products, cosmetics, foreign liquor, tobacco products, prepared food, chocolate, pasta, footwear, sports goods and household appliances, toys, musical instruments, watches, glassware and ceramic ware wet wipes, prepared flour and starches and many items will be restricted.
The Government Information Department said in order to manage the present economic situation, certain imports will see a temporary restriction while some will require a valid license issued by the Controller General of Imports and Exports Control and other imports will have tax imposed/increased.
