A gold piece embedded in a Buddha statue which was under restoration had been stolen yesterday, police said.
They said that the gold decorative piece embedded in the forehead of a standing statue situated at Karaganda Sidarthodaya Privena had been stolen while it was under repairs.
A repairman who came for repairs yesterday had found that the golden piece (Urna Datuwa) was missing and had notified a resident monk at the Piriwena.
The repairmen had left the scaffolding near the statue as they were unable to complete painting the statue on Tuesday due to rains. However, police suspect the five and half pound Rs 600,000 worth had been stolen as there was a means to access the statue, .
Police said that they have not yet identified the culprits and are carrying out further investigations.
