The compensation paid for families of those who die from hit-and-run accidents has been increased from Rs.200,000 to Rs.250,000, the Transport Ministry said.
The compensation paid for those who sustain fatal injuries from hit and run accidents also has been increased by Rs. 50,000. Previously, Rs.100,000 was paid for those who sustain severe injuries.
The Ministry said compensation payments will be done by the National Council for Road Safety.
Over 47 percent of the accidents take place between six to 10 p.m. Police statistics show that this year (till October 31) 1880 people have died in 1796 fatal road traffic accidents while 5122 accidents have resulted in severe, lifelong disabilities.
