Govt makes moves to enhance road safety

The Government of Sri Lanka has noted prevention and management of injuries as a priority area for action in view of the growing trend of road traffic injuries over the past few weeks.

Hence, the Ministry of Health has taken over responsibility to develop the national policy and strategic framework on injury prevention and management with input from officials of the Road Development Authority (RDA) and Sri Lanka Police, and other related experts plus, stakeholders involved in accident mitigation. 

A workshop to make the public aware of said progressive approaches was held today (September 27) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute chaired by the State Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

The conference further fastened on incident management which determines the main procedures after an accident. The importance of basic first-aid knowledge referring to preserving life, reducing pain or minimizing consequences of injury, preventing future disease or injury and fostering recovery were also brought to the fore.

Besides, greater importance will also be attached to establishment of Presidential Task Force particular to road safety management.

State Minister Alagiyawanna was of the view that road safety is a shared responsibility and broached the subject of developing the proposed demerit points system without delay. 

Furthermore, an e-monitoring system tailored for motor vehicle importation and an e-traffic policy aimed at traffic safety assessment with the assistance of Road Development Authority (RDA) and Sri Lanka Police will be brought up to minimize road traffic accidents and ensure road safety.

The event was also attended by Chair Professor of Community Medicine of University of Peradeniya Prof. Samath Dharmaratne, Deputy Director General of the RDA Mr. K. Chandrakumara, Consultant Community Physician of the Ministry of Health Dr. Samitha Sirithunga, Attorney-at-Law of Department of Motor Traffic K.I. Yogachandra, Deputy Inspector General of Police DIG Indika Hapugoda, Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety Mr. Malith Jayathilaka, and other related dignitaries.
