Govt. says recent rise in violence an attempt to sabotage ongoing investigations/cause unrest

News

The spate of killings in recent days is an attempt to derail ongoing investigations into several high profile criminal cases including a fresh probe into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, Secretary to the Public Security Ministry retired senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne said today.

He said the Government has received intelligence reports of attempts to sabotage the ongoing investigations and cause unrest in the country and has identified those behind such attempts.

“We will take stringent action against such persons who are behind these attempts and we will not allow the ongoing investigations to be sabotaged or for anyone to cause unrest in the country,” Mr.Seneviratne told reporters at a press briefing this morning.

He said that most of the masterminds behind gang violence operate from overseas. “Since the government came to power we have used diplomatic channels and extradited nine wanted criminals from the Middle East and four from India,” he added.
