The Government will send 50 more Labour officials to Sri Lankan embassies overseas to look into welfare for migrant workers, Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said today.
Mr Nanayakkara briefing Parliament on ongoing inquires into a scandal on trafficking Lankan Women to Middle Eastern countries and on allegations on some of them being abused.
He said currently Sri Lanka has only 40 Labour officers to serve in all countries in contrast to 150 officers who were present earlier.
The numbers were reduced on a decision taken by the former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government to scrap the Labour officers position in embassies.
Mr Nanayakkara said that cabinet approval has now been granted to send 50 more officers.
Meanwhile the Cabinet has approved to allocate funds to repatraite Lankan women stranded in Oman.
According to Mr Nanayakkara 77 women are currently stranded in Oman while another 77 are strnaded in Dubai.
