A series of shooting incidents were reported in Colombo and its suburbs from last night through this morning, leaving one man dead, others hospitalised, and causing property damage in several locations.
Police said the first incident occurred last night near the Mahawatte Clock Tower in Grandpass, where two unidentified gunmen opened fire on a 26-year-old resident of Kelaniya.
The victim, who sustained critical injuries, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Police suspect that a revolver may have been used in the attack. Grandpass Police are conducting further investigations.
In a separate incident early this morning in Panchikawatte, Maradana, two unidentified men on a motorbike opened fire on a 44-year-old resident of the area.
The injured man was rushed to the National Hospital. The motorbike allegedly used in the shooting, along with the rider, were later taken into custody in Bloemandal.
Meanwhile, in Kuttiduuwa Negombo, another shooting was reported this morning, when two men on a motorbike fired at a residence, damaging property but causing no injuries. Police believe the incident stemmed from a financial dispute.
A fourth incident was reported in Alubomulla, Panadura, where a 9mm pistol was used to fire into a grocery store, damaging a refrigerator. No casualties were reported, and Alubomulla Police are carrying out further investigations.
