Debris from the X-Press Pearl vessel, which is currently on fire off the Colombo Port, has started washing up along the Negombo coast, raising concerns of a serious environmental disaster due to chemicals that were reportedly being transported onboard the vessel.
Our photographer captured these images of the debris that had washed up along the Negombo coast today. Authorities have appealed to the public not to pick up or take away any debris from the vessel they find as they may contain hazardous chemicals.
The Sri Lanka Navy has started providing security to the area after several people were observed picking up and taking away debris that had washed ashore, despite warnings issued by authorities.
