The Development Officers' Service Union held a protest opposite the "Isurupaya" Education Ministry premises in Battaramulla yesterday demanding that Development Officers with the relevant qualifications be recruited to the Teacher Service.
The union pointed out that there have been various reports that there are as much as 60, 000 vacancies for teachers at national and provincial school level. In light of this, they requested that the Government take steps to absorb Development Officers holding university degrees be also given the opportunity to enter the teacher service.
They also called on the Government scrap the maximum age limit of 35 years that has been put in place for Development Officers to be eligible for entry into the teacher service.
