After much effort, officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) in Batticaloa have rescued an elephant calf that had got entangled in the wire of a trap set up by poachers.
The calf had got entangled in the wire of a trap set up by poachers to hunt other wildlife, and had been in much pain at the time it was rescued.
A group of DWC officers rescued the elephant calf, who is about one year of age, while entangled in the wire in the northern Batticaloa jungles that come under the Kiran Divisional Secretariat Division.
The rescued elephant calf was administered treatment at the scene by vets and was thereafter transported to the DWC Range Office in Ampara for further treatment.
