After much effort, wildlife officers and area residents yesterday managed to rescue an elephant calf who had fallen down an abandoned well at Kudamedawachchiya in Karuwalagaswewa.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation's (DWC) Karuwalagaswewa office said officers arrived on the scene yesterday after being informed by area residents that an elephant calf had fallen down an abandoned well and could not get out. The calf, which officers said was about two years of age, was in great distress inside the well.
Wildlife officers suspect that the calf was part of a herd that had been seen in the area several days ago eating ripe palmyrah fruits that had fallen from trees situated close to the abandoned well. It is suspected that the calf had fallen into the well while trying to eat the palmyrah fruits that had fallen near the well.
