With the government having banned the importation of chemical fertilizers, farmers are being forced to look for ways to produce organic fertilizer. Accordingly, farmers in Puttalam are now uprooting the water hyacinth, better known as "Japan Jabara" plants that have spread throughout tanks in the district with hopes of producing organic fertilizer with them.
The invasive plant species has caused headaches for authorities in the past, with large amounts of funds and machinery having to be used to clear the tanks from the Japan Jabara plants.
However, farmers are now doing this on their own, as they wade deep into the tanks and uproot the plants and load them onto tractors so that they can be taken to produce organic fertilizer.
