Organizations representing the fishing community staged a protest in front of the Fort railway station today against Indian fishermen poaching in Lankan waters and the use of illegal fishing practices.
Fisherfolks from North to South took part in the protest demanding the government to address their grievances including enforcing the law against illegal equipment used for fishing, action against Indian fishing trawlers and seeking compensation from the X-Press Pearl ship disaster.
Several parliamentarians were spotted at the protest venue as well.
Fishermen, especially from the North, have been protesting against Indian fishermen and trawlers during the past few weeks.
