Heavy rains that were experienced since yesterday have claimed several lives, caused floods and blocked roads in various parts of the island.
Several areas in the Kegalle district experienced flooding after the Gurugoda Oya burst its banks. The floodwaters also cut off travel along the
Kegalle - Avissawella Main Road.
Schools in the Dehiovita Education Zone were closed today after nearly a dozen schools became flooded.
Meanwhile, several reserviors in the Central Hills have been overflowing following heavy rains. Spill gaves of the Wimalasurendra Reservoir were opened last evening at Norton Bridge were opened last evening.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
