News

Large crowds were in attendance to witness the final Esala Perahera of the historic Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya, which paraded the streets last night (3).

For the final Perahera last night, President Ranil Wickremesinghe placed the casket containing the sacred relics on the tusker 'Tharindu' belonging to the Kataragama Kiri Vehera.

At the conclusion of the Perahera, Kataragama Basnayaka Nilame Dishan Gunasekara handed over a 'Sandeshaya' (Proclamation) to Chief Incumbent of the Kataragama Kiri Vehera Ven. Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera proclaiming that the Perahera has been concluded successfully.

The Esala celebrations officially came to an end early this morning with the 'Diya Kaepeema' (Water Cutting Ceremony) held at the Jeewamali Thotupala on the Menik Ganga.
