US Ambassador Julie Chung joined volunteers on Saturday to clean the beach at Crow Island in Mattakkuliya in view of World Coastal Cleanup Day.
The Western Province Ministry of Local Government, the Environmental Police Unit of the Sri Lanka Police, the Western Province Waste Management Authority and the organisation Clean Ocean Force were among those whose volunteers were in attendance at the beach cleanup.
Officials said 700 kilograms of plastic bottles 2 metric tonnes of other garbage was removed during cleanup operations on that day alone.
