University lecturers and school teachers today joined a satyagraha demanding the government to withdraw proposed amendments to the General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Act.
The satyagraha was organized by the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) near the Fort railway station on Monday.
IUSF’s Convener Wasantha Mudalige said a letter has been sent to all Members of Parliament by Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando with proposed amendments to the Act and requesting MPs to propose changes/ introduce amendments by March 08.
“Despite the assurance in August last year to temporarily hold introducing amendments to the Act, the government is now planning to introduce amendments thereby privatising, militarising the education system and changing the whole higher education structure,” he said.
He charged the government for its attempts to oppress the student movement by delaying the fully opening of state universities. (Pix by M.D.Nissanka)
