A major racket of slaughtering turtles that are caught in nylon nets in the Kalpitiya lagoon has been exposed. Fishermen who use these nets bring back the turtles and sell them at Rs 10,000 per turtle. The remains of the turtles have been found thrown into the shrub jungles. The Director of Fisheries for Puttalm, Suminda Wickremaarachchi said he is unable to send his officers to check on it due to the Coronavirus conditions. "Who will take responsibility if my officers are affected with COVID-19', he questioned when a journalist raised the issue with him. Police said they have not received a formal complaint.
