Prison department official said that the deceased inmate housed at Agunukolapelessa prison was identified as a 62 year old resident of Daraniyagala. He was charged for a murder in 2001 and was sentenced for 25 years in prison.
The prisoner was who had been drafted into kitchen work division had slipped and fallen into hot cauldron while removing another cauldron from the fire with the help of another inmate.
Following the incident the prisoner who was suffering from serious burn injuries were admitted to the Tangalle hospital but after receiving treatment for 10 days he had succumbed to the injuries received.
The Department of Prisons assured that they are taking steps to avoid such incidents occurring, they added apart from the investigation launched by the Prison headquarters official a separate investigation is carried out by the Agunakolapelessa Prison Superintendent.
