Speculation was rife on Monday night in political circles that Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila was contemplating resigning from the government.
Gammanpila, the leader of the Pivithuru Hella Urumaya which is a constituent member of the ruling SLPP coalition, is likely to make a speech in parliament tomorrow and step down from his position, political source said.
The outspoken Minister who has warned that the country would face severe power cuts in the future due to a shortage of foreign exchange to purchase fuel for thermal power generation, was unavailable for comment. If Gammanpila steps down, he would be the first high profile minister to quit the present government.
