As part of the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) had prohibited spitting in public places and imposed heavy fines for violations.
Mayor of JMC V.Manivannan told the reporters today that the regulations will come into effect from tomorrow onwards and the violators would be fined Rs 2000 for the offense.
Those who litter and dump garbage within municipal areas will also be fined Rs 5000. In order to implement these new regulations, the Mayor formed a five member task force to ensure the city is clean.
Mayor urged the public and traders to support the JMC initiative to keep the city clean as over hundred tested positive for COVID-19 last month alone.
