Sri Lanka’s brand Ambassador  for Tourism, Sanath Jayasuriya and Yohani de Silva, popular for ‘Menike Mage hithe’ are on a mission to attract more tourists from India to the country.

Sri Lanka has ventured into a series of road shows in key Indian cities.

The first roadshow was held from Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on Monday  to the St Regis Hotel in Mumbai on September 28 and concludes with the Hyderabad Roadshow at Taj Krishna Hotel on September 30.

The main purpose of hosting these roadshows is to promote Sri Lanka as an attractive tourism destination across India, as it is one of Sri Lanka’s key source markets and has been extremely supportive in Sri Lanka regaining lost momentum both post pandemic and the recent economic downturn.

Sri Lanka is witnessing a considerable increase in tourist arrivals with India leading the way and securing the number one position, with 80,000 tourist arrivals to the country so far and a doubling of these numbers is expected by 2023. 

Mr Jayasuriya, who was appointed tourism brand ambassador in August, and Yohani De Silva would participate in these events with dance & entertainment included, to give the audience a glimpse of Sri Lankan culture. 

A delegation of over 50 local travel agencies and hotels will be participating at this event,  led by Harin Fernando, the Minister of Tourism and many industry stakeholders including Sri Lankan Airlines and Mastercard have supported this endeavor. 

The target audience being tour operators, media, key influencers, corporations, trade associations and key tourism industry stakeholders in India, it is expected to create a positive mindset regarding Sri Lanka. 

Meanwhile, commemorating the World Tourism Day on September 27 bearing the theme “Rethinking tourism”, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority organized an event in Colombo, with the UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative Christian Skoog participating.
