Junior staff at Government hospitals in the Puttalam district have gone on strike since early this morning (5) in protest over unpaid overtime allowances due to them.
About 1500 junior staff at District Hospitals, Base Hospitals and Rural Hospitals have gone on strike over failure to pay overtime allowances due to them from November and December last year.
The strike caused severe inconvenience to patients who came to hospitals in the district today.
Representatives of hospital staff who are on strike pointed out that overtime allowances of junior staff at hospitals in the Kurunegala district, which also falls under the Wayamba Provincial Council, have already been paid. They said they were only asking for one month's overtime allowance. They noted that health officials had promised to provide overtime allowances within the day and said they would return to work if this is done.
