The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kalpitiya Police Station has been interdicted by the National Police Commission over allegations of molesting a newly recruited female police officer.
The accused OIC had allegedly been evading the special investigation team deployed to look into the case. He was released on a surety bail of Rs 500,000 bail on Tuesday (13) after surrendering to the Puttlam Magistrate's Courts via a motion submitted by his lawyers.
Earlier, a special police investigation team led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) had been deployed to carry out an investigation into the incident on the directions of the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) in charge of North-Western Province, Kithsiri Jayalath.
However, when the special police team arrived at Kalpitiya Police Station on January 29. they found that the OIC had taken leave.
The officer had allegedly returned to duty on February 4. Afterwards when the team of investigators again turned up at the police station on February 7, the officer had allegedly once more evaded them by obtaining leave claiming that his mother was unwell.
A case was subsequently filed against him at the Puttalam Magistrate's Court on February 12.
