President’s Counsel (PC) Kaushalya Nawaratne has stepped down from his role as President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) with immediate effect.
The decision follows a unanimous call from the Bar Council of the BASL on August 31, urging Mr Nawaratne to resign. During a meeting, the Bar Council approved a proposal requesting his resignation.
The Bar Council, the apex body of the BASL decided unanimously to call on Mr.Nawaratna to resign after it was found that he failed to act with transparency in relation to the contract entered into by the BASL with JICA dated 11 December, 2023 and thus violated the trust reposed in him as the President.
As a result, he was found to have breached the trust placed in him as the President of the BASL.
PC Nawaratne had been re-elected uncontested as President of the BASL earlier.
