The National Building and Research Organization (NBRO) issued a landslide warning to a number of areas in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts following torrential rains to the western slope of the Central hills.
Pasbage korale, Ganga ihala korale, Doluwa, Deltota, Udapalatha and Udunuwara areas in Kandy district, Ambagamuwa District Secretariat Division (DSD) and surrounding divisional secretariat division in Nuwara-eliya district, Kuruvita and Ratnapura DSD and surrounding divisional secretariat divisions are issued with a Level 1 alert.
Level 1 alert is issued for residents to be watchful since the rainfall within the past 24 hours has exceeded 75 mm triggering the possibility of landslides, rockfalls, slope failure, cutting failure and ground subsidence.
Meanwhile, rockfall on Colombo-Hatton road, wall collapses and road blocks in Ginigathhena area were reported due to wet weather conditions. The overflowing of Hatton oya has led to houses in the surrounding area going underwater. A number of sluice gates in up country reservoirs too have been opened due to rising water levels.
