Average overall island-wide voter turnout at the 2025 local government election stood at about 25 per cent just after 9.00am today, according to reports from District Returning Officers.
Voting for the election opened at 7.00am today at 13, 759 polling centres island-wide. Voting will continue till 4.00pm. However election officials and monitoring groups said they were expecting a reduced voter turnout, compared to the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Over 17 million voters are registered to vote to elect members to 339 Local councils across the country. Accordingly, voters will be electing members to 28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
A total of 75, 589 candidates from 49 political parties and 257 independent groups are contesting the election. The poll will see the 8287 members elected to local authorities.
