Lohan Ratwatte rejoins SLPP for 2025 local poll

News

Former MP Lohan Ratwatte has declared that he will contest the 2025 Local Government Elections through the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Addressing the media in Kandy on Monday (March 11), Ratwatte announced his decision to rejoin the SLPP and expressed his readiness to assume the party’s leadership for the Kandy District. He assured his full contribution to securing the party’s victory in the upcoming elections.

Ratwatte had previously left the SLPP to support National Democratic Front (NDF) candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe in the 2024 Presidential Election and did not contest the General Elections.

Ratwatte last served in a government position in 2021 as State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoner's Rehabilitation. He resigned from his role following pushback on his attack on prisoners in the Anuradhapura Prison. Ratwatte was reported to have carried out targeted racially incited verbal abuse on Tamil prisoners on who he also brandished a pistol.

Ratwatte was also arrested in October last year for owning an unregistered luxury vehicle but was released on bail in December when he was arrested again for drunk driving.
