A lightweight barrier system designed within the country is to be introduced to unprotected railway lines in order to prevent accidents from occurring in the future, Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
The estimated cost being Rs. 1.5 million, the National Council for Road Safety under the Ministry of transport will provide Rs. 750 million. The remainder is to be provided by Philanthropists.
A successful pilot project was carried out at the Godagama Railway Station in the Kelani Valley railway line.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that the United People’s Force (UPF) will assist in implementing the project of installing an emergency signal system for unsafe railway lines.
