The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court today ordered the former minister MP Kumara Welgama to be released from bribery charges against him for creating a new position at the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and causing damages to the state.
He was accused of inventing a new position of Deputy Chairman at the SLTB, paying wages of Rs. 3 million for it, while causing damages to the government.
After the Bribery Commission announced it would withdraw the case and reserve the right to refile it against MP Welgama, Chief Magistrate of Colombo Nandana Amarasinghe ordered his release.
The Bribery Commission retracted the complaint because it had not been filed in accordance with the law. A bribery case must be filed with the consent of all three commissioners.
