MP Mano Ganesan today raised in Parliament an issue of the Police distributing a set of forms in Sinhala language to the Tamil community in the Colomo city to collect personal information of residents.
Mr. Ganesan said the distribution of the forms in Sinhala was a violation of the Constitution.
He also raised questions as to why personal information was being collected pointing out that religion was among the information sought.
Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles responding said that if the forms had been distributed in Sinhala it could be corrected, but said the practice of collecting personal information was a security requirement and had been carried out in the past.
He said that it was incorrect to say that only the Tamil community was targeted as the form was distributed to all communities.
