MP Sarathi Dushmantha has been appointed as a replacement for the position of General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), upon the removal of MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.
The decision was reached last evening (11) during the SLFP’s central committee meeting where the dismissal of the MP from his position as the party’s General Secretary and its membership was officially notified.
However, immediately after Jayasekara was removed from the post, it was Sarath Ekanayake who was named to oversee the work of the General Secretary.
The party membership of MP Jayasekara was suspended on September 05 and in a letter, the Chairman of the SLFP former President Maithripala Sirisena said a disciplinary inquiry would be conducted against the MP for violating the party’s constitution.
Despite that, in response to the concerns arising, former President Sirisena had also mentioned that MP Jayasekera’s suspension from party membership is only temporary and that the SLFP is ready to accept the return of the MP to the fold as a party member.
Speaking further in this regard, MP Duminda Dissanayake has added that MP Jayasekera has the possibility to be assigned as the Chairman of the SLFP in due course if it is viewed that he is competent for the role.
