(UPDATED) The Fort Magistrate today ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to check the veracity of the medical reports submitted by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to obtain bail when he was produced in courts in August on allegations of misuse of state funds for a foreign trip.
The directive was given by Magistrate Isuru Nettikumara when the case was taken up today.
The Magistrate ordered the CID to report the findings to the court and postponed the case until January 28, 2026.
Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris told courts that the reports submitted by Mr Wickremesinghe cannot be accepted and therefore his bail should be cancelled.
However, the Magistrate did not accept the position of the ASG.
The court also ordered that if there are any other suspects in this case should be arrested and produced while a decision should be taken if the former President’s Secretary should be made a suspect in this case.
The CID had alleged that the former President misused state funds during his visit to the United Kingdom in 2023 where he attended a ceremony organised to honor his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, at a British university. The CID claimes that Rs 16.6 million had been spent for the visit.
