A man who raped a school girl nine years back, was sentenced to a 12 year Rigorous Imprisonment term by Colombo High Court Judge Nawarthna Marasinghe today,
Then sentence was given after the suspect pleaded guilty for the offence when the victim was about to give evidence for the second day.
The court ordered the convict to pay Rs 300,000 as compensation and a fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed.
The girl who was below 16 years at the time of the incident in 2013 is currently an undergraduate and told the courts that her focus now was ‘mental freedom and education.’
The judge said that the girl gives an example to the others on getting on with life.
Delivering the sentence said that the offence was serious and only second to murder adding that if the parents were careful such incident could have been prevented.
The convict at the age of 30 years at that time was working as a labourer near the victim’s house.
