A 23-year-old resident of Mattakkuliya was shot and killed at Elakanda in Wattala this afternoon, police said.
The shooting was carried out by two gunmen on a motorbike. Several spent T56 cartridges were found at the scene of the crime, indicating that the crime was committed using a T56 assault rifle.
Police suspect that the shooting was the result of a dispute between underworld gangs over illegal narcotics.
The body was taken to the Ragama Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Several police teams have been deployed under the direction of the Kelaniya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Police Media Unit said.
